Washington walkabout

As it was still early afternoon we decided to go and explore a bit. It was very hot and when we reached the nearest Metro station it seemed like a good plan to take the train before Charlie melted. A very nice man in the ticket office helped me use the machines to get a couple of Metro cards.

We got off in Down town and from there walked to The White House.

Pimple was excited but we didn't see Joe.

After a little rest we walked down to the National Mall. The Washington Monument is absolutely huge I hadn't realised it was so big.

Quite a bit of the park is off limits because of the firework preparations but you can go and see the Lincoln Memorial. It's quite impressive. There are lots of signs telling you to be quiet and everyone inside is jabbering at the tops of their voices!

The view of the Washington Monument in the reflecting pool is quite nice.

Pimple liked that too.

All the time we were walking around there was thunder rumbling in the distance and it spitted with rain regularly. The sky got very dark but the monument was in bright sunshine.

We walked over to the Martin Luther King Jnr Memorial when it was spitting quite firmly. The memorial is well done but the view opposite was turned out to be rather special.

There are many war memorials in the grounds but the Korean War one was the most impressive.

It was really surprising to see large passenger aircraft flying so low over the Lincoln Memorial on their way into Dulles Airport, where they seemed to do a bit of a handbrake turn to land.
